How to Winterize Your Roof in New Jersey (Before the First Freeze)

February 1, 2026 6 min read Maintenance

Ice dams, frozen gutters, and wind-lifted shingles cause millions in damage across NJ every winter. Here's the exact checklist Somerset County homeowners should complete before temperatures drop below freezing.

Why NJ Winters Are Especially Hard on Roofs

New Jersey winters combine the worst conditions for roofing systems: temperatures that cycle above and below freezing dozens of times per season, heavy wet snow loads, ice accumulation at eaves, and wind events that exploit any weakness in shingles or flashing. Somerset County homeowners who skip fall roof maintenance often face expensive emergency repairs in January or February.

The good news: most winter roof damage is preventable. Here's what to do before the first hard freeze.

The 8-Step Fall Roof Winterization Checklist

1. Clean Your Gutters — Completely

Clogged gutters are the #1 cause of ice dams in NJ. When gutters are full of leaves and debris, water can't drain and backs up under shingles. Clean gutters in late October or early November, after most leaves have fallen. Check that downspouts are clear and that water flows away from the foundation.

2. Inspect Flashing Around All Penetrations

Flashing is the metal that seals the joints where your roof meets chimneys, skylights, vents, and walls. Freeze-thaw cycles cause flashing to expand and contract, eventually cracking the sealant. Inspect all flashing for gaps, rust, or lifting edges and re-seal with roofing caulk where needed.

3. Check Attic Insulation and Ventilation

This is the most important — and most overlooked — step for ice dam prevention. Ice dams form when heat escapes through the roof deck, melts snow, and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. Proper attic insulation (R-49 to R-60 in NJ) and ventilation (soffit + ridge vents) keep the roof deck cold and prevent this cycle.

4. Look for Missing or Damaged Shingles

Walk around your home and look at the roof from the ground with binoculars. Missing shingles, lifted corners, or cracked sections are entry points for water. Any shingle damage should be repaired before winter — a small repair in November is far cheaper than a leak repair in February.

5. Trim Overhanging Tree Branches

Heavy snow and ice accumulation on branches can cause them to snap and fall on your roof. Trim any branches that hang within 10 feet of the roof surface. This also reduces leaf accumulation in gutters and prevents moss growth from shaded areas.

6. Check and Clear Roof Vents

Ridge vents, soffit vents, and gable vents must remain unobstructed for proper attic ventilation. Check that soffit vents aren't blocked by insulation from inside the attic. Blocked ventilation leads to moisture buildup, mold, and ice dams.

7. Install Ice and Water Shield at Eaves (If Not Present)

New Jersey building code requires ice and water shield at the eaves of all new roofs. If your roof was installed before this was standard practice, adding this membrane provides critical protection against ice dam infiltration.

8. Schedule a Professional Pre-Winter Inspection

A professional inspection takes 30–45 minutes and can identify issues that aren't visible from the ground — lifted flashing, soft spots in the decking, inadequate attic ventilation. Catching these before winter saves significant money and stress.

What to Do If You Already Have an Ice Dam

If you notice an ice ridge forming at your eaves during winter, do not try to remove it with a hammer or ice pick — you'll damage the shingles. Instead:

  • Use a roof rake to remove snow from the lower 3–4 feet of the roof before it can melt and refreeze
  • Apply calcium chloride ice melt in a stocking along the dam (not rock salt — it damages shingles and gutters)
  • Call a roofing contractor to assess whether water has already infiltrated under the shingles
